CNN —When the World Health Organization recommended on Friday which influenza viruses to target in vaccines for next year, it removed a family of viruses that hasn’t been seen since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although flu has rebounded, the family of viruses known as influenza B/Yamagata did not, suggesting it may have been driven to extinction. Quadrivalent vaccines, which target four types of flu, can still target a B/Yamagata lineage component. WHO advisers emphasized that flu vaccines are safe and effective, no matter which formulation a country uses. The FDA’s vaccine advisory committee is scheduled to meet October 5 to discuss recommendations for flu vaccines to be offered in the Southern Hemisphere in 2024.

CNN —A sparkling new supernova has appeared in the night sky, and a telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii was perfectly poised to capture the aftermath of the cosmic burst. The supernova was first spotted within the spiral arms of the Pinwheel Galaxy by Japanese astronomer Koichi Itagaki on May 19. The Pinwheel Galaxy is in the direction of the Ursa Major constellation, about 21 million light-years from Earth. The new supernova glimmers bright blue in one of the galaxy’s spiral arms in the bottom left of the image. It’s the second supernova observed in the Pinwheel Galaxy in 15 years.

It failed to meet its goal of non-inferiority compared to the conventional vaccine for the B/Victoria and B/Yamagata-lineage strains, the drugmaker said. Parts of 31 highways were closed in central and eastern Japan, while 54 central Tokyo expressway exits were blocked, the ministry said. Services on more than a dozen train routes in central and eastern Japan had suspended operations or were planning to do so, the land ministry said. East Japan Railway (9020.T), the country's biggest train operator, said a high-speed service between Tokyo and the northeastern prefecture of Yamagata would be suspended later on Friday.
